Rocket1580B Front Side

The Rocket 1580B is the industry’s most versatile PCIe Gen4 NVMe storage and connectivity solution. The compact, half-height PCIe Gen4 x16 AIC can be easily integrated into most PC Server and Workstation platforms. The 8 dedicated NVMe device channels are capable of delivering up to x4 lanes of PCIe Gen4 host bandwidth, and can host any industry standard U.2 or U.3 NVMe SSD via a range of robust, enterprise-grade cabling accessories. Integrated NVMe Surprise Add & Remove capability streamlines upgrade and maintenance sessions as the host system can remain online when servicing, upgrading or replacing storage media.

The Rocket 1580B incorporate Broadcom’s industry leading PCIe Gen4 48-Lane PEX88048 switch chipset to optimize signal integrity, reduce latency, maximize transfer throughput. This highly flexible, performance-focused hardware architecture is unique to HighPoint NVMe solutions and ensures bandwidth is never wasted. The Rocket 1580B allocates a dedicated x16 lanes of upstream bandwidth, and x4 lanes of downstream bandwidth to each device, and is capable of delivering up to 28GB/s of transfer throughput via a single PCIe slot!

NVMe Surprise Add & Remove Solution

NVMe Surprise Add & Remove capability (a.k.a. Hot Plug and Hot-Swap support) is of critical importance for an increasing number of professional server and workstation environments, and when properly implemented, can minimize downtime. The ability to add, remove or replace storage media without powering down the host platform can drastically streamline field service workflows, as the host platform can remain fully operational during maintenance and upgrade sessions.

The Rocket 1580B’s integrated NVMe Surprise Add & Remove features are boon customers that need to integrate enterprise grade storage expansion and serviceability to any Industrial, Data Center or Professional PC platform with a free PCIe 4.0 x16 slot. The Rocket 1580B can save customers hundreds if not thousands over competing NVMe solutions which are generally designed for enterprise server environments.

The PEX88048’s creates what Broadcom describes as a “Synthetic Hierarchy” to isolate the host OS from PCIe topology changes and errors associated with a surprise addition (an SSD being suddenly plugged into the Rocket 1580B). It essentially creates virtual “placeholders” for any unused NVMe device channels which can then be replaced with an actual physical NVMe SSD should the need arise.

Working in a similar vein, Downstream Port Containment and Read Tracking capability work to ensure the host system operates and performs normally whenever a drive is suddenly removed. When the SSD is unplugged, a virtual “placeholder” drive will be activated in its place until a hot unplug event is registered by the host. This enables administrators to safely remove SSDs at will, without powering down or rebooting the OS.

Versatile Cabling Solutions for Legacy SFF-8643 & SFF-9402 Standards

Rocket 1580B AICs are compatible with a variety of industry standard backplanes and connectors– not just SFF-8639, which is employed directly by U.2 media. We offer a selection of PCIe Gen4 Certified cabling accessories capable of supporting a wide range of storage configurations, including Legacy SFF-8643, and SFF-8654, SFF-8611 OCulink, and MCIO 8i backplane connectivity, which are based on the SFF-9402 pin definition. This enables the Rocket 1580B to host any industry standard 2.5” U.2 or U.3 NVMe SSD via the appropriate cabling/backplane configuration.
