Virtual Machine platforms enable a single computing platform to host multiple, independent installations of an operating system, commonly referred to as instances.  

 

For most VM applications, each instance must be capable of fulfilling the role of an actual, physical workstation - hence the name, "virtual machine". The VM host allow clients (users) to access each instance via a network or internet connection. Naturally, the speed of these connections is a primary concern. However, as each instance is essentially a software emulation of a physical hardware platform, the performance capabilities of the VM host's storage devices must not be ignored.  

 

Currently, the vast majority of VM host platforms continue to employ conventional hard drives or SSDs for boot volumes and general storage. Software applications that utilize high-performance network infrastructure require a storage solution capable of quickly offloading data from a local source to a centralized server. For example, Advanced security solutions, such as a real-time surveillance system, employ banks of HD cameras and microphones that transmit data to a shared storage pool via local network. The data pool must be capable of handling a slew of tasks simultaneously; processing multiple incoming data streams, accommodating random playback requests, and cataloging archived data.

When it comes to media editing, stability and performance are paramount.
