(7) Question: My system is unable to boot after a kernel update. How to recover it?
Answer:
When you update the kernel to a new version, the pre-compiled driver modules will no longer work for the new kernel. So, if the system is installed on the RAID controller, it will be unable to boot. To update to a new kernel, you have to build new driver for the new kernel and update the driver at same time. Remember to make a backup of the old kernel and driver in your boot configuration in case the upgrade fails.

If you have updated the kernel and the system is no longer bootable, you have to boot from the old kernel, build a driver for the new kernel and update the new initrd file for the new kernel. If you have no backup kernel to boot from, try to boot the installation CD into rescue mode, and recover the system. The steps vary on different Linux distributions; please refer to corresponding documents for more information.
