SAT-TE Enclosure Management
SAF-TE, is the abbreviation of SCSI Accessed Fault Tolerant Enclosure. SAT-TE Enclosure Management is a function assisting the system administrator to identify and monitor storage devices, controllers, backplanes, power supplies, and other components. Other environmental monitoring, such as storage chassis temperature and fan speed, can also be tracked through SAF-TE Enclosure Management.

SCSI

Small Computer Storage Interface.

Storage Array

A collection of disks or tapes from one or more commonly accessible storage systems, combined with a body of Array Management Function.

Storage Device

A collective term for disks, tape transports, and other mechanisms capable of non-volatile data storage.

Storage System
A system consisting of one or more storage controllers or I/O bus adapters connected to storage devices such as CDROMs, tape transports, removable media loaders and robots, that provides I/O services to one or more host computers.
Strip

A number of consecutively addressed blocks in a single extent. The ANSI X3T10 SCC disk array architecture requires that all strips in an extent contain the same number of blocks. A disk array’s Array Management Function uses strips to map virtual disk block addresses to member disk block addresses. Also known as stripe element.

Strip Size
The number of blocks in a strip. The ANSI X3T10 SCC disk array architecture requires that all strips in an extent be of the same size. Also known as chunk size and stripe depth.

Stripe

The set of strips in corresponding locations of each of a disk array’s p_extents. The strips in a stripe are associated with each other in a way that allows membership in the stripe to be uniquely and unambiguously determined by an arrays Array Management Function. The Array Management Function uses stripes to map virtual disk block addresses to member p_extent block addresses.
Stripe Depth Synonym for strip size. The number of blocks in a strip. Also, the number of consecutively addressed virtual disk blocks mapped to consecutively addressed blocks on a single member of a disk array. In the ANSI X3T10 SCC disk array model,

stripe depth

is constant for p_xtent, but may vary among the p_extents comprising a virtual disk.

Stripe Element

A synonym for strip.

Stripe Size

The number of blocks in a stripe. Stripe size in a parity RAID array is the product of stripe depth and one less than the number of disks in the array

Striped Array, Striped Disk Array

A collection of disks comprising an array which implements the RAID Level 0 or disk
striping mapping technique

Striping
Short for disk striping; also known as RAID Level 0. A mapping technique in which fixed-size consecutive ranges of virtual disk data addresses are mapped to successive array members in a cyclic pattern.

Staggered Drive Spin-up
Switching on all HDDs at the same time might lead to issue of electrical load. Staggered Drive Spin-up provides the mechanism by which HighPoint adapters can sequence disk drive initialization and spin up.

Swap, Swapping
The installation of a replacement unit in place of a defective unit in a system. Units are any parts of a system which may either field replaceable by a vendor service representative or consumer replaceable.
