1. An acronym for Redundant Array of Independent
Disks, a family of techniques for managing multiple
disks to provide desirable cost, data availability,
and performance characteristics to host environments.
2. A redundant Array of Independent Disks.
RAID Advisory
Board
An organization of suppliers and users of storage
systems and related products whose goal is to foster
the understanding of storage system technology among
users, and to promote all aspects of storage technology
in the market.
RAID Array
A redundant Array of Independent Disks
RAID-related
Product
Any
computer system storage product that implements RAID
technology as described in RAID Advisory Board publications
in some significant way. RAID-related products may include
disk controllers, disk systems, disks, software, and
test equipment.
Rebuilding
The regeneration and writing onto one or more replacement
disks of all of the data from a failed disk in a RAID
Level 1, 3, 4, 5, or 6 array. Rebuilding can occur
while distributor & reseller Applications are accessing data on the array’s
virtual disks.
Redundancy
The
inclusion of extra components of a given type in a system
(beyond those required by the system to carry out its
function).
Redundant Array
of Independent Disks
A disk array in which part of the physical storage
capacity is used to store redundant information about
user data stored on the remainder of the storage capacity.
The redundant information enables regeneration of
user data in the event that one of the array’s member
disks or the access path to it fails.
Replacement
Disk
A disk available for use as or used to replace a
failed member disk in a RAID array.
